Financial Assistance

Each year the Food Science program awards scholarships ranging from $300 to $1,000. National IFT scholarships can be as large as $10,000.

This year the Food Science program awarded a total of $28,150 in scholarships to 14 undergraduate students and 10 graduate students. These scholarships are in addition to those awarded by the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, campuswide and external scholarship programs.

In addition, four of the undergraduate students were selected to receive the IFT National Scholarships for 2006-2007.

Food Science Departmental Awards

Application forms are available in 256 William C. Stringer Wing. Applications must be returned no later than Feb. 1.

  • Damon V. Catron Memorial Scholarship
    Seniors majoring in Food Science and Human Nutrition. This scholarship is a memorial to the first chairman of the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition. It is presented to an outstanding senior student majoring in Food Science and Nutrition. The scholarship is based on high academic achievement, interest in food science and plans to pursue food science as a profession.
  • W. H. E. Reid Scholarship in Dairy Technology
    Students majoring in Food Science and Human Nutrition, demonstrating an interest in dairy technology. The recipient shall have a GPA of at least 2.5 or a semester average of at least 2.8 in the last semester before application is made (transfer students from other campuses must have completed at least 15 hours at MU). Preference will be given to undergraduate students. The purposes of this scholarship are to (1) assist worthy students in obtaining an education related to dairy technology, (2) perpetuate the ideals of Professor W. H. E. Reid who continually promoted high-quality dairy products and stressed that every student has qualities that need to be affirmed that they may be developed for the good of others as well as one's self, (3) promote scholarship.
  • The Dr. J. E. Edmondson MMFEHA Scholarship Award
    Undergraduate (GPA of at least 2.8) or graduate student (GPA of 3.25) enrolled in sanitary science or related fields such as food science. Award is based on good moral character, financial needs, activities and grades. The Missouri Milk, Food and Environmental Health Association provides this scholarship to assist worthy students in the study of sanitary science and related sciences.
  • Beck Flavors Scholarship
    Freshmen or sophomore students enrolled in the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources at MU, who are majoring in Food Science and Human Nutrition. This award was established to honor and recognize a freshman or sophomore demonstrating superior scholarship and exceptional interest in professional employment in the food product industry. The purpose of this award is to stimulate early interest in MU students entering the food science and food processing industry.
  • Elizabeth Wilhelm Weeks Scholarship
    Juniors or seniors majoring in Food Science and Human Nutrition. The scholarship was established in memory of Elizabeth Wilhelm Weeks who was killed while a student at MU. The recipient should be well-rounded by participating in employment, extracurricular activities (particularly the Dairy Products Tasting Team), volunteer work, social organizations and have overcome personal obstacles in pursuit of a career.
  • Eugene V. Nay Scholarship
    Graduate students (M.S. or Ph.D.). Mr. Nay was a charter member and past chairman of the St. Louis Section, IFT. It was under his chairmanship that the Annual Food Technology Conference, in 1952-53, had its beginning on the MU campus. This award goes to a graduate student, or students, based on his/her academic achievement, participation in outside activities and a sincere interest in food science as a profession.
  • The Harold P. Dugdale Scholarship
    Graduate student(s) majoring in meat science. This award is in honor of Mr. Dugdale, a native of St. Joseph, Mo., who was an early leader in the beef packing business. The scholarship goes to a deserving graduate student(s), majoring in the area of meat science. The applicant should have demonstrated high scholastic ability in both graduate and undergraduate studies. The student should be interested in pursuing a career in meat science after graduation.

St. Louis Section of IFT Awards

  • James O. Mavis Award
    Freshmen pursuing a course of study to become qualified for employment in the food industry. This award is designed to honor and recognize a freshman demonstrating superior scholarship and exceptional interest in professional employment in the food industry. A purpose of this award is to stimulate early interest in student organizations at MU and in the St. Louis Section of IFT. The award is sponsored and supported by the St. Louis Section, IFT.
  • Robert L. Hawley Award
    Sophomores pursuing a course of study to become qualified for employment in the food industry. This award is designed to honor and recognize a sophomore demonstrating superior scholarship and exceptional interest in professional employment in the food industry. A purpose of this award is to stimulate early interest in student organizations at MU and in the St. Louis Section of IFT, as well as the National IFT. Interest in food industry will be judged by activities in the St. Louis IFT Section, Food Science Association or through activities associated with student membership in Institute of Food Technologists. The award is sponsored and supported by the St. Louis Section, IFT.
  • Charles M. Harrold Award
    Juniors majoring in Food Science and Human Nutrition. This award was named in honor of Charles M. Harrold by the St. Louis Section of Institute of Food Technologists, after his untimely death, for his participation in the IFT as an early member and for his role as chairman of the organization in 1954-55. The award is given to a junior majoring in Food Science and Human Nutrition. The person receiving the award should exhibit a sincere professional interest in food science.
  • E.H. Harvey Award
    Seniors pursuing a course of study to become qualified for employment in the food industry. For a senior student in the department of Food Science and Human Nutrition pursuing a course of food science studies to become more qualified for employment in the food processing or food development industry. This award is designed to honor and recognize a senior student demonstrating superior scholastic achievement and exceptional interest in professional employment in the food industry. The purpose of this award is to stimulate interest in a student working toward graduate studies or the food production business field. The award is sponsored and supported by the St. Louis Section, IFT.

National IFT Scholarships are also available: 23 graduate fellowships, 52 junior/senior scholarships, 32 freshman/sophomore scholarships. Application forms are due in February/March and available in 256 William C. Stringer Wing or online.

Food Science Association Awards

No application is necessary as the award recipient is selected by the members of the Food Science Association.

  • Anselma DeGuzman Memorial Award
    Member of the Food Science Association. This award was named in honor of Ms. Anselma DeGuzman who was killed in an accident while a student in the Food Science and Nutrition Department. The award is given to a student member of the Food Science Association who has exhibited a sincere and active interest in the Association's activities and objectives. The selection of a recipient shall be made on the following basis: Effort in scholastic achievement and need for assistance in continuation of his/her education.

  • Missouri Association of Meat Processors Scholarship
    Undergraduate in any major. Preference made for relatives of employees of Missouri Meat Processors. Please contact MAMP directly.
