Welcome Prospective Students
Food Science at MU is a truly unique experience. We provide high quality undergraduate and graduate instruction to help you develop excellent leadership skills and prepare for a successful professional career.
Benefits of joining the Food Science program at MU include:
- One-on-One Attention
In the Food Science Program, you will not be lost in the crowd. Our program is small enough that individual attention to every student is assured. For example, the average class size in our program core courses is 15 to 20 students. There are also plenty of opportunities outside the classroom for faculty to interact with students on a one-on-one basis.
- Modern Facilities
The Food Science program is located in Eckles Hall, which includes the new William Stringer Wing. Within the facility, we have fully equipped and ultra-modern food chemistry, food analysis, food process engineering, food microbiology and safety, as well as nutrition and biochemistry research laboratories. In addition, we have a food sensory laboratory, a test kitchen, and dairy and meat processing pilot plants. We are also home to the famous Bucks Ice Cream.
- A Career that Changes Lives
Food is increasingly recognized as the single most important determinant of our health. With a Food Science degree, you have the opportunity to be at the forefront of designing foods and ingredients that help fight some of the most common chronic health problems, including heart disease, diabetes and cancer.
Most of our students who maintain a good academic standing get some form of scholarship during the course of their study. Scholarship opportunities are available at the departmental, College, University and national levels.
Many of our students participate in paid internship opportunities in the food industry and gain invaluable practical experience that greatly enhances their job prospects upon graduation. The faculty actively work with students to identify and plan for appropriate internship opportunities year round.
Undergraduate research experience is available in our laboratories. Interested students should contact their adviser or individual faculty for openings.
Virtually all our graduates find ready employment soon after graduation. Among current employers of our recent graduates are top international and local consumer product companies, federal and state government agencies and universities.
Many of our graduates also choose to further their education by working on graduate degress including MBAs, nationally and internationally.
According to the most recent Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) survey, food science graduates are among the best paid in life science and related professions.
